The best place to start is selecting a builder you trust and together establish a budget that will work for you. Then together you can work with a designer to customize the project to your needs. What kind of questions should I ask when selecting a contractor?
It is always great if the contractor was referred to you by someone you trust. Even with that, here are some things that are important to consider:
- Is
the contractor licensed?
In most cases, it is illegal for someone to do remodeling without a State of MN contractors license.
- How long have they
been in business? Statistically,
most remodeling companies go out of business within the
first 5 years. Are they going to be around to stand behind
their work?
- Can they readily give you
a list of satisfied customers?
Be sure to actually call several of these people.
- Are they properly insured?
Proper insurance means that they have both liability and workers compensation insurance. Even if they do not have employees a contractor still needs workers compensation to protect you from liability in case a worker becomes injured on your property.
- Are they a member in good standing with
the Rochester Area Builders Association?
- Have there been any complaints filed against them with the Better Business
Bureau?
- Who will be doing the actual hands-on work and how experienced are they?
Yes, in some instances you can save money by doing certain portions of the project yourself. For example painting is an area that many homeowners choose to do themselves in order to save money.
